UK SPEAKER PROPOSES SPEAKER ZUNGU TO PRESIDE OVER 153RD IPU ASSEMBLY

ARUSHA, 6 October 2026 — Tanzania’s role in global parliamentary diplomacy received further recognition in Arusha after the Speaker of the United Kingdom House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, proposed the Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania, Hon. Mussa Azzan Zungu, to serve as President of the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

The proposal, presented during a meeting of the IPU Governing Council at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC), received support from Uganda and the United Arab Emirates, paving the way for Hon. Zungu’s election as President of the Assembly. Contemporary reporting confirms his election, while IPU records identify both Hon. Zungu and Sir Lindsay as the current Speakers of their respective chambers. JAMHURI MEDIA

The development carries particular diplomatic significance for Tanzania as host of the Assembly, placing the country at the centre of high-level parliamentary dialogue and engagement among delegations from across the world.

Sir Lindsay and Hon. Zungu also exchanged greetings during the Governing Council meeting, reflecting the spirit of parliamentary cooperation that underpins the IPU and its role in fostering dialogue among national legislatures.

For Tanzania, hosting the 153rd IPU Assembly provides a platform not only for parliamentary diplomacy, but also for showcasing Arusha and the country more broadly as a meeting point for international dialogue, cooperation and multilateral engagement.

From Arusha, Tanzania continues to connect parliaments and nations through dialogue and parliamentary diplomacy.
